  2. 1. Pg 149, lines 104-106 "I saw deep down in the fosse / People immersed in filth that seemed to drain / From human Privies"
How does this scene fit the flatterers? Why did Dante chose it?

    2. On page 149, Dante has a conversation with Alessioe Interminei. How is this conversation representative of Dante's feelings towards flattery? Why do you think their conversation was so brief and vague?

    3. In the beginning of Canto 24 (lines 1-16), it opens with a metaphor.
What is the meaning of this metaphor? How does it relate to Dante and Virgil's relationship?

    4. Pg 201-202, lines 92-104
"People were running, naked and terrified...As he took fire and burned...the dust spontaneously / Resumed its former shape"
Why do you think Dante chose this punishment for the thieves? What are the serpent symbolic of? How does Dante feel about their punishment?

    5. Page 209-210, lines 68-89
"Now the two heads had become one...He eyed the serpent and the serpent eyed him"
How is the fusing and switching of bodies and serpents representative of fraud? How does Dante view this punishment? Which sin do you think is worse, fraud or theft?

    6. Do you agree with putting flattery, theft, and fraud in the second lowest level of hell? Thinking through a present-day mindset, how would you feel if everyone who has ever committed flattery was put into circle 8? Or would you be in circle 8 yourself?

    2. why are frauds and flatterers deeper in hell than the other circles we've talked about, like the violent, wrathful, etc?

    3. are serpents attacking the naked sinners an appropriate punishment for the robbers?

    4. why is vanni fucci so ashamed and angered at Dante's presence and Dante witnessing him in this circle?

    5. why has Dante started to feel less pity for the sinners as he goes deeper into hell? (p 207 "the serpents were my friend from that time forth...")

Why are the sinners in the Fraud circle ashamed of Dante's observations and avoid eye contact, instead of being eager to question Dante like the sinner's in the other circles?

    2. p. 143 line 25-32
What is the significance of having the sinners moving in such an orderly fashion in two opposite directions?

    3. p. 203 line 121-124, p. 207 line 10-13
What is Dante insinuating about the character of the people in Pistoia? Does he like or dislike them, and why?

    4. p. 207 line 17-33, Canto XV
Why does Cacus the centaur receive a different punishment than the human thieves?

  5. how do demons and and whips suit the punishment for the frauds?
and the human exrament for the flatterers?

why are the fraud victims timid towards dante?
Does it seem like dante feels differently about the sinners as he goes progresses throught the circles?
do you think the different types of fraud should be treated with separate punishments?
do you think the demons wipping the seducers are being whipped from behind is significant for the seducers?
